From Refugee to Restorer: Scovia’s Story and the Heart Behind Ovens of Hope
“Remember, even in life's darkest moments, God is there, turning pain into hope. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel.” — Scovia Mansuk
When we first heard Scovia’s story, we saw more than just resilience; we saw hope that changes lives. Her journey from the hardships of refugee life to becoming a beacon of strength for other women embodies the mission of Ovens of Hope.
Scovia Mansuk was born into conflict, raised in displacement, and shaped by profound loss, including the death of her father. Her life as a refugee, both in Uganda and South Sudan, was marked by constant upheaval. Yet, even in the face of unimaginable trauma, her encounter with Jesus became a turning point, granting her peace and purpose. That purpose burns brightly today.
As a wife and mother of two, Scovia has made it her mission to minister to and empower other women facing similar circumstances. With a love for Scripture and unshakable faith, she walks alongside refugee women, helping them move from mere survival to thriving. Her anchor verse, John 15:16, serves as a reminder that we are chosen, not abandoned, and appointed to bear fruit, even in difficult places.
Why We Started Ovens of Hope
Scovia’s story is not unique; it represents countless women who have lost their homes, families, and stability—yet are rich in strength, dignity, and faith. Ovens of Hope was born from a calling to walk alongside women like Scovia. We aim to build a path toward spiritual restoration and economic empowerment - igniting transformation one oven at a time.
We are a Christ-centered nonprofit driven by the mission to equip women in Uganda’s refugee settlements with the tools, training, and support needed to build baking businesses rooted in discipleship and supporting a self-sustained women’s ministry.
By constructing mud-and-brick ovens, we provide the means to bake bread, cookies, and other goods for sale in local markets. However, the oven is only the beginning. Through Yenet's business, finance, and faith training, women step into leadership roles as providers, community change-makers, and disciple-makers.
Who We Are
At Ovens of Hope, we believe:
In the transformative power of Jesus Christ.
Empowerment must be both spiritual and economic.
Community-led change is lasting change.
Hope rises—one oven, one story, one woman at a time.
We are an all-volunteer, faith-driven team dedicated to lifting women from the ashes of conflict into lives of purpose. We start with one oven—just as Jesus began with one woman at the well, one mustard seed, and one act of faith. Like Scovia, we know that God uses the small things to accomplish immeasurable outcomes beyond our imagination.
